This is the story of the Nyimili Range, a majestic range of hills near the mining town of Tom Price in the western Pilbara region. Nestled high in the Hamersley Ranges, the range has been the subject of an ongoing research project bringing together communities and researchers in a shared learning experience, documenting the objects and stories that make this a special and dangerous place. Through rare artefacts and the stories of contemporary people, the range tells a powerful tale of survival and resilience from the ancestral past and into the future.
This series of panoramas takes you on a tour through the range – from sweeping valleys to twisting gorges – revealing striking evidence of the material culture left behind by the ancestors of the Yinawangka people.
In this tour you will encounter a living landscape. Listen closely and you will hear incredible stories about the spirits that inhabit the range, magical powers that derive from the land, dreamtime stories which are tethered in the landscape of the range and the danger associated with disturbing a place as spiritually important as this. The stories you will hear about Nyimili are intrinsically linked to a system of beliefs and explain the connectedness of Nyimili and the range to Aboriginal people across the Pilbara and the Western Desert.
In this tour you will hear about Yinhawangka family connections to Nyimili. You will meet people pointing out places within the range where their recent ancestors were born and buried and by doing so also passing on knowledge to the next generation. The Yinhawangka people are fighting to protect the Nyimili Range and are ready to manage the area. Throughout the videos you will also get to understand the kind of joy and spiritual up-lift that people experience by being out on their country. Nyimili Range is a place that distils the continuing connection of Yinhawangka people to their country and the importance of protecting these places and transmitting cultural knowledge to future generations so that culture, Law, language, community and country can remain strong and healthy.
